Tonic
Tonic
You have been asked to devise and make a promotional music video for the new act 'Tonic'. As a new act the record label is keen that this first release appeal to a wide audience and establish an image that is both recognisably unique and appealing to their target audience. With this in mind, their release will be a cover version and will be used as a platform for future original releases. The record label is happy for this release to be any of the three songs listed below or another to which has been approved by the teacher and would like you to choose whichever on you can make a dynamic promo for, as the key thing is to get them exposed.
Rob(25), James(25) and Nick(23) are middle class lads from Portsmouth, Sussex. they started the band when they were in school and after performing in local pubs and clubs for a few years were sounded by a local producer and eventually signed to Rough Trade.

21st century Rough Trade
- Rough Trade evolved in the 21st century as they start to sign contract with artist from other countries, as they signed The Stroke to their music label, who are from New York City
- Rough Trade allow their artist to develop and improve as one of their programs and allow them to develop their own music as their own paces, which is different to major music company programs such as the X factor.

Rough Trade 1990
- What problems did Rough Trade incur at the start of the 1990s ?
- Rough Trade was in a financial crisis due to miss management of the cashflow and that in March the cashflow hulled. which lead them to sell their assets to maintain their music labels.
- Rough Trade have to sell some of their asset again to maintain the running of the business. Also they would have to sell their warehouse and some of their employees.
- Major record labels made sub record labels which was marked as a independent music company to distributed band who whould go mainstream.
- The action they taken was to intorducts a new business partener to Rough Trade and that they sold their original store so that they are able to keep the Rough Trade name.

- Rough Trade start by Geoff Travis, who travel the around America and he decide to open a music shop, after buying many record while traveling in America, that allow people to listen to music while they are in the store.

- The ethos of Rough Trade at that time was a communist and marxist view, this is due to the fact that they dislike the big records labels.

Jay Z 99 problems music video
Genre Characteristic:
- The genre characteristic in 99 problems show a urban location ( Brooklyn) as a run down city, this would be unusual in hip hop music video, as most hip hop music video would show wealth in their music videos.
- Gang culture is also shown in Jay Z's music video, as their are images of violence and crime activity which is shown in most hip hop music videos.
- The images of bling is minimal and their are cheap cars, which are unusual in hip hop music videos.
- stereotypical race is represented- white guy in a suit, policeman are white and black people are jailbirds.
- Song is about being a gangsta, lifestyle and video images illustrate this.
- Synchronous relationship throughout the song, image reflex the lyrics sometimes generally and sometimes more specifically, literally e.g God = the image of crucifix and Bitch = image of women
- story about getting pulled over by police is literally illustrated through the visual- very narrative style
- from the hood- Jay Z pulls hood down
- Camera movements are jerky and constant which matches the rise and fall of the beat.
- Lot of cuts and many different images make it hard to see everything on first viewing.
- Lots of low angle & close up shots of Jay Z - make him appear powerful desirable image to promote within the hip hop industry.
- Fewer shots of him than you might expect seems like he's being modest or that he's the top dog on the street.

Alex and Martin were a music video directingduo consisting of Alex Courtes and Martin Fougerol. They directed several music videos with artists such as The White Stripes and U2.

Here is one of the music video that they have directed, i was interested in was that they use animation for music video, as they show the animation of paint splashing on to the screen and they animated the band. they also use bright colours in darks background.
They also have godwin theory in the music video, as their is a relationshipbetween music and visuals, which was show then their was the animation of paint splash on the artist, which was similar someone getting shot.
3. The relationship between music and visuals show the pace of the music video change with the music, as their is a part of the music video where it is slow pace.
